Calvin Colarusso, MD - The Nuclear Family, a Living Organism

This presentation is based on a paper by Calvin Colarusso, MD, which reflects his longstanding interest in the observation of children and adults within the context of the nuclear family. In this work, Dr. Colarusso conceptualizes the family as a living organism that progresses through five stages of development, from formation to eventual decline, offering a framework for understanding the evolution of family structure and relationships over time.

In the second half of the paper, Dr. Colarusso presents psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic work with two individuals whose early traumatic experiences shaped their development. Through treatment, both were able to work through these early disruptions and ultimately develop the capacity to form healthy, sustainable family relationships.

Bringing together theory and clinical material, this presentation offers a rich perspective on the developmental life cycle of the family and the therapeutic processes that support the creation of a thriving and viable organic nuclear family life.

*Come early to join us for continental breakfast and coffee before the presentation.
